School Closure

Please find a message below from Ms Rima Horton, Chair of Governors and the Governing Body:

Dear parents and carers of children at Barlby

Thank you for your patience and support of Barlby primary school during these difficult times. The staff have made great efforts to ensure that Barlby will be as safe as possible for the children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 returning on June 1.

We asked Kensington & Chelsea council some questions in advance of the reopening and would like to share with you what we found out.

We asked for an estimate for the local coronavirus infection rate and the rate among BAME communities in the borough. We were told that this information does not exist but that the infection rate across the UK is understood to be low enough for schools to reopen.

We also asked if testing for infection could be guaranteed in North Kensington. The government has promised that any schoolchild or member of their household who displays symptoms will be eligible for a test at a mobile testing unit, a regional testing unit or a home-testing kit.

There are no permanent testing sites in North Kensington. There is a single mobile testing unit covering the whole borough. The availability of home-testing kits cannot be guaranteed, according to the NHS website through which tests are booked.

This is the website:

It is vital for parents and carers who choose to send their children back to Barlby that they look out for symptoms of Covid-19. These symptoms are a high temperature, a new continuous cough or the loss of taste and smell. Details can be found at this NHS website:

If a child develops any of those symptoms, they must self-isolate at home while their parent or carer books a test. As testing availability cannot be guaranteed, please keep the school informed about your progress in booking one.

Barlby very much looks forward to welcoming children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 back on June 1 and hopes to welcome all its pupils back as soon as possible. Meanwhile, children from all year groups who cannot return to school will continue to receive home learning from their teachers.

With best wishes

Rima Horton,

Chair of Governors
