Cornerstones

At Barlby Primary school we provide a creative curriculum based around the Cornerstones Curriculum, for the following Foundation subjects: Geography, History, Science, Art, and Design Technology. We also follow the National curriculum requirements for Computing, and in PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) we follow the study programme developed by the PSHE Association. All of our planning is adapted to the needs of the pupils being taught.

Music is planned and delivered by our full-time music specialist teacher. All children from nursery to year six learn Spanish. In Key Stage 2 this is led by a bilingual member of staff. We also employ a full-time PE coach who delivers outdoor PE lessons and supports with the planning of indoor PE. R.E is taught as a discrete part of the curriculum and is question led – for example ‘What makes a day special?’ We also teach Philosophy for children which helps develop an inquiring mind across other subject areas.

When the new National Curriculum was introduced by the Government (2014-15) we reviewed our school approach and provision for pupils. As part of this work we decided to implement the new Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children.

What is the Cornerstones Curriculum?

The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our new curriculum is delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of learning.

We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our new curriculum provides lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum. Parents and carers are invited into classes every half-term to look at the outcomes.
